ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The city is inviting residents to take part in National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 4, the annual nationwide event that promotes neighborhood ties and public safety through local gatherings.
Communities across Alexandria will host events that evening, with times varying by neighborhood. Past gatherings have ranged from outdoor block parties and cookouts to apartment lobby meetups and ice cream socials — occasions the city says give neighbors a chance to connect and build a safer Alexandria.
Last year, Alexandria was recognized as one of the top 15 National Night Out communities in the United States in its population category, chosen from more than 400 similarly sized communities. The city credited the turnout of residents, civic associations, apartment communities, businesses and public safety partners. In 2025, Alexandria saw a double-digit drop in crime, which officials attributed to the combined efforts of residents, community organizations, city agencies and public safety personnel.
The Alexandria Police Department, public safety partners and city leadership plan to visit registered events through the evening as schedules allow. Officials are encouraging residents in single-family homes, apartments, townhomes, civic and homeowners associations and faith-based organizations to host or join a gathering, and to invite neighbors and local groups to expand participation.
Residents and community groups can register their events with the police department to be added to the official list and to help coordinate visits from public safety personnel. Registration is available at alexandriava.gov/NNO.
