City will launch recreation campaign at William Ramsay, with a new mural and a Friday night party

"Where You Belong" starts Sept. 18 at the West End center. The city describes it as both a new look and the start of a broader investment, without saying yet what that investment includes.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The city's Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities will launch a campaign called "Where You Belong" on Sept. 18, starting at the William Ramsay Recreation Center on the West End.

The center at 5650 Sanger Ave. is the first facility to carry the campaign, under the tagline "Friends from All Places." The department says other recreation centers will follow and plans to announce them on social media.

A public event runs from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 18 with karaoke, cornhole, bingo, a DJ, food, giveaways and prizes. The city is asking for RSVPs.

The evening also introduces a new mural at the center by Washington artist Tammy Barnes.

The city describes the campaign as more than a new look, calling it the start of a broader investment in recreation that includes facility improvements, new programming and what it terms welcoming and inclusive spaces. The announcement does not say what those improvements are, what they cost or when they happen.
