ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The bridge carrying Arlington Ridge Road and Mount Vernon Avenue over Four Mile Run will close in both directions during off-peak hours from May 16 through May 23 while crews install five steel girders, the Arlington County Department of Environmental Services announced.

Closures will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays, according to the project page. Outside those windows, all traffic will resume on the east side of the bridge. No work or full-bridge closure is scheduled for Sunday, May 17. The girders will be installed by crane and then secured in place, the county said.

Metrobus routes A11 and A12 will detour via West Glebe Road during the closures, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority said. Bus stops on Mount Vernon Avenue between West Reed Avenue and South Glebe Road will be skipped during the closure windows.

Arlington Ridge Road/Mount Vernon Avenue Bridge Reconstruction Project (Arlington County)

The work is part of the broader Arlington Ridge Road/Mount Vernon Avenue Bridge Reconstruction Project, a joint effort between Arlington County and the City of Alexandria to replace the deteriorated roadway and underlying bridge deck. Construction began in summer 2025 and is expected to be completed in summer 2027.

Crews are currently in Phase 1, demolishing and reconstructing the west side of the bridge over Four Mile Run. That phase is expected to be completed in October 2026. During construction, one lane in each direction remains open and the east sidewalk remains open to pedestrians.

The Four Mile Run Trail underpass on the Arlington County side, north of the bridge, is closed during Phase 1. Trail traffic is being detoured via South Lang Street and South Glebe Road to reconnect with the trail; signs are posted along the route.

Arlington County said the bridge will continue to operate during construction with reduced lane capacity in response to community concern over connectivity and impacts on nearby residents and businesses. Project goals include returning the bridge to safe operational condition for all users, improving access for people walking, biking and driving, and advancing the community vision of the Four Mile Run Master Plan.

Funding for the project comes from regional and state sources, with local funding shared between Arlington County and the City of Alexandria. Additional information is available on Arlington County's project page.
