The Chamber ALX will host its annual CareerCon, a free post-graduation planning event for high school and undergraduate students, on Saturday, May 2, at Virginia Tech's Boeing Auditorium in Alexandria.
The three-and-a-half-hour program, presented by Virginia Tech, runs from 10 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. in Academic Building One at 3625 Potomac Ave. Registration is complimentary for students, and parents and teachers are welcome to attend as long as they are accompanying a student.
Organizers describe the event as a chance to connect Alexandria students with professionals in industries they may want to enter, while also covering "essential curriculum skills for adult life." A few students who attend the full program will be eligible for interest-based scholarships totaling $4,000.
The day opens with registration at 10 a.m. and a 20-minute opening session at 10:30. At 10:50 a.m., students will split into industry track breakout rooms, where experts in fields such as health care, finance, STEM, entrepreneurship, hospitality, and criminal justice and government will field questions for an hour.
At 11:50 a.m., an off-curriculum track will run for an hour, with breakout rooms devoted to often-overlooked life skills and practical topics including applying to college, conducting a job search, and pursuing internships and scholarships. A 15-minute closing session begins at 12:50 p.m., and students must be present for it to be eligible for the scholarship drawing. The event concludes at 1:15 p.m.
Winners must be enrolled at a public or private high school or as an undergraduate at the time of the announcement. Funds are sent directly to the student's educational institution and must be used within four years.
