City proposes more right-turn-on-red bans in Old Town and at two school intersections

The Traffic and Parking Board votes Oct. 26.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The city wants to bar drivers from turning right on red at more signalized intersections in greater Old Town and Carlyle, and to give people on foot a head start into crosswalks, part of its Vision Zero effort to end traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2028.

The Traffic and Parking Board votes on the No Turn on Red restrictions Oct. 26. The city has not identified the Old Town intersections. The docket, which would list them, was still marked pending Friday.

It did name two locations, and neither is in greater Old Town or Carlyle: Mount Vernon Avenue at Glebe Road, and the intersection of Quaker Lane, Janneys Lane, and Seminary Road. The city said restrictions are proposed there to improve safety for students walking to nearby schools.
