ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, when clocks move back an hour. Fire departments have long used the twice-yearly change as a prompt to check smoke alarms.
The reminder arrives days after a Sunday fire at 251 South Pickett St. left 14 apartments uninhabitable and sent the American Red Cross to help about 16 families. The Alexandria Fire Department ruled it accidental and said it was caused by the improper disposal of smoking materials in a fourth-floor balcony planter.
