ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Dolores Huerta, the labor organizer who co-founded the United Farm Workers union with César Chavez, died Wednesday at her home in Bakersfield, California, The Associated Press reported. She was 96.
She died of cancer, surrounded by family, family spokesperson Erik Olvera said, according to the AP.
Gov. Abigail Spanberger, Lt. Gov. Ghazala Hashmi, Del. Alfonso Lopez, whose district includes part of Alexandria, and City Council member Canek Aguirre were among the Virginia officials who mourned Huerta. A year ago, she campaigned for Spanberger, then the Democratic nominee for governor, at a "Latinos for Spanberger" event at Los Tios Grill in Del Ray.
