Election reform committee backs four-year School Board terms, with no staggering or smaller board

The 3-1 recommendation, opposed by committee chair Canek Aguirre, would elect all nine members with City Council in governor's race years starting in 2033

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - A joint City Council and School Board committee voted 3-1 on Tuesday to recommend four-year terms for the Alexandria School Board, with all nine members still elected at the same time and no change in the board's size.

It was the only option of 15 the committee voted on to get the three votes needed to go to City Council and the School Board. Councilman Canek Aguirre, who chairs the committee, cast the lone no vote because the option keeps nine seats.

"I don't agree with 9 seats," Aguirre said. "So that's why I'm voting no on that."

Councilwoman Sandy Marks and School Board members Kelly Carmichael Booz and Abdulahi Abdalla voted yes. The committee reports to the council and the School Board on Nov. 10.
