ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Historic Alexandria is offering a summer series of Grown-Up Field Trips, giving adults a chance to explore the city's history through hands-on activities, primary sources, and guided conversations.

Mayor Alyia Gaskins highlighted the series in her daily social media video Wednesday morning.

"One of the things I love most about our city is that we are a historic city, but we're not static," Gaskins said. "We're constantly finding new ways to tell our history, to create opportunities for residents and visitors to learn our story."

The next field trip is this Sunday, July 19, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Alexandria Archaeology Museum, located on the third floor of the Torpedo Factory at 105 N. Union St. The program focuses on ship science and the 18th-century ship discovered along Alexandria's waterfront, with participants using dendrochronology and other scientific methods to explore the mystery of how a ship ended up underground. The museum is accessible by elevator.

A second field trip is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 23, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the Alexandria Black History Museum at 902 Wythe St. That program focuses on Moss Kendrix, a pioneering public relations expert who changed the way media portrayed Black Americans.

Tickets are $15 per person and $12 for Historic Alexandria members. They can be purchased online through the OHA Shop at alexandriava.gov/Historic.
