Inova celebrated a major construction milestone on Monday at its new Alexandria campus, marking the completion of the structural framework on the grounds of the former Landmark Mall.
The "topping out" ceremony — a construction tradition marking the placement of the final structural beam — signals that the building's skeleton is complete and interior work can begin in earnest. The Alexandria campus is on track for completion in 2028.
When it opens, the new Inova Alexandria will replace the current Inova Alexandria Hospital and include 192 licensed inpatient beds in fully private rooms, advanced cardiac and neurosciences care, comprehensive women's health services, specialized cancer care through a standalone Inova Schar Cancer Center, and outpatient specialty services. The campus is part of a broader "One Hospital, Two Sites" vision that also includes a new Inova Franconia-Springfield campus, which reached the same structural milestone this week. Together the two facilities total more than 1.4 million square feet.
Mayor Alyia Gaskins highlighted the project's long-term significance for the city in a press release, noting that Inova has been part of Alexandria for more than 150 years and that the new WestEnd campus will expand access and elevate the healthcare experience for residents.
Among those in attendance for the ceremony were Sen. Elizabeth Bennett-Parker, Vice Mayor Sarah Bagley, Councilman Abdel-Rahman Elnoubi, Councilman Canek Aguirre, and Delegate Kirk McPike, who previously served on City Council before his election to the House of Delegates. Bennett-Parker called the project transformational for the city.
Former Mayor Justin Wilson, who helped broker the original deal to bring Inova to the Landmark site, noted on social media Tuesday that he had announced the agreement five and a half years ago while pulled over on the side of a road in Nelson County — the only spot nearby with cell coverage — while on vacation.
Inova is also accepting donations toward the project through its "Paving the Way Together" commemorative paver program at Inova.org/EasternRegion.
