ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Virginia Railway Express has scheduled another full closure of King Street next week as it continues replacing two aging rail bridges over King Street and Commonwealth Avenue, part of a sweeping, multi-year rehabilitation of Alexandria Union Station.
The closure will run from 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 18, to 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 24.
During that period, King Street will be fully closed between Russell Road and Daingerfield Road, with traffic detoured to Duke Street. Commonwealth Avenue will remain open with a single travel lane and alternating traffic directed by flaggers. Sunset Drive will remain completely open.
The sidewalk connecting King Street to the Alexandria Union Station tunnel will be closed on both sides under the bridge throughout the closure. The sidewalk along Commonwealth Avenue will remain open, and detour signage will be posted to direct pedestrians. The stairs from the east platform of Alexandria Union Station to King Street will remain closed until the end of all construction.
The bridge replacements are one of several infrastructure investments reshaping the King Street and Commonwealth Avenue corridor. VRE is serving as the lead agency on both the station improvements and the bridge replacements, which the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority designed in collaboration with CSX as part of its Alexandria Fourth Track project. When complete, the new bridges are expected to increase clearance beneath them, opening space for expanded pedestrian and cyclist access.
