ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The Alexandria City School Board will review a staff comparison of four ways to add middle school seats on Thursday. The costs range from $48.7 million for the plan already in the division's capital budget to $237.5 million for a new elementary school and a new middle school at James K. Polk.
All four scenarios end the K-8 model at Patrick Henry and Jefferson-Houston, according to the staff memo. They differ on what Jefferson-Houston becomes, how many middle school seats the division gains and how many elementary seats it gains or loses. The memo does not recommend one; it asks the board to review them as it builds its next 10-year capital plan.
Some estimates have moved since last fall. Last November, Sophie Huemer, ACPS director of capital programs, planning and design, estimated a Cora Kelly middle school at about $156 million when board member Abdulahi Abdalla asked about it. The memo now puts that conversion at $150.9 million, before the cost of converting Patrick Henry and Jefferson-Houston.
