The owner of Matt and Tony's All Day Kitchen + Bar is seeking city approval to open a new restaurant called Little Birdie across the street, filing an administrative special use permit application Feb. 2 for the space at 1504 B Mount Vernon Ave. that has sat empty since Benny DiForza's Pizza closed last fall.

Matthew Sloan, managing member of Table 52 Hospitality LLC, also owns Matt and Tony's at 1501 Mount Vernon Ave. The property at 1504 B is commercially zoned and owned by the Estate of Michael M. Hadeed. The application is pending with the city's Department of Planning and Zoning, with no public comment deadline listed yet.

The permit request covers only the 10-seat outdoor dining component of the proposed restaurant. Under recent revisions to Alexandria's zoning ordinance, restaurants no longer require a special use permit to operate, but outdoor dining still does. Table 52 is asking to assume the outdoor dining permit under the same conditions that applied to Benny DiForza's, approved March 6, 2024.

Little Birdie would operate Sunday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Sloan holds a 46.5% ownership stake in Table 52 Hospitality LLC. His partner is Eric Brannon, the culinary director at Matt and Tony's Cafe, who holds a 25% stake. The law firm Walsh, Colucci, Lubeley & Walsh P.C. of Arlington is representing the applicant.

The Alexandria Brief reached out to Sloan on Monday for more details on the new restaurant. This story will be updated when we receive a response.
