Updated 5:55 a.m. Saturday — Dominion Energy reported 14 Alexandria customers without power as of 5:46 a.m. Saturday, down from 9,127 early Friday. Regionwide, 1,365 customers remained out.
ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Power has been restored to nearly all of Alexandria after severe thunderstorms moved through the region early Friday, knocking out traffic signals, blocking roads and leaving more than 9,000 customers in the dark.
Dominion Energy's outage map showed 14 Alexandria customers out as of 5:46 a.m. Saturday. The count peaked at 9,127 at 5 a.m. Friday, about 13% of the 71,312 the utility serves in the city, and fell through the day to 2,206 by 8:15 a.m., 1,791 at 11 a.m. and 1,642 by 5 p.m.
Across Northern Virginia, 1,365 customers remained without power Saturday morning, down from 51,104 at the peak. Arlington had 379. Statewide, Dominion counted 9,605 customers out of 2.8 million served.
The National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington issued a flash flood warning covering Alexandria, Arlington and Reagan National Airport from 12:04 a.m. until 3 a.m. Friday.
The storms hit the West End hardest. Police said early Friday that Seminary Road was impassable between Dover Street and North Beauregard Street and that a downed power line had closed North Beauregard at Morgan Street. By the morning commute, signals were out at eight intersections, most along the Seminary, West Braddock and King Street corridors, and the city said repairs to a signal on Seminary Road would continue into the afternoon.
Trees and lines also blocked 100 Wesmond Drive and the southbound Van Dorn Street ramp to Metro Road.
The city said Friday that no homes or businesses were damaged. Dominion listed the cause of the largest West End outage as pending investigation through Friday morning.
