ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Forty Alexandria youth soccer players are expected to travel to Croatia next August to train with coaches from NK Osijek, the first concrete program to emerge from the friendship city relationship City Council approved six days ago.

Alexandra Végh, who became president of the Croatian first-division club this year, described the program during a panel at an all-day conference the Croatian Embassy held at The Satire. The hotel, previously Hotel AKA Alexandria, was the Croatian national team's base during this summer's World Cup, and was renamed during the team's stay.

Végh said the two clubs had agreed the possibilities between them were broad and chose to start with exchanges. The group would be under-13 and under-14 players, she said, who would train with Osijek's coaches in the mornings and spend afternoons on cultural programming about Slavonia, the eastern Croatian region where the club is based.
