Registration is now open for the region's annual Bike to Work Day, which this year marks its 25th anniversary as one of the Washington area's signature sustainable commuting events.

The free event is scheduled for Friday, May 15, with commuters across the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia invited to pedal to work and stop at one of more than 100 pit stops along the way. Alexandria riders will have six stops to choose from, spanning neighborhoods across the city.

One of the marquee local stops will be at John Carlyle Square Park, 300 John Carlyle St., running from 6 to 9 a.m. Hosted by The Carlyle Council, the stop will feature a DJ, hot breakfast sandwiches, yoga stretching breaks, and appearances by local elected officials. Handy Bikes will also be on-site, offering tune-ups.

In Del Ray, VéloCity Bicycle Co-op will host a stop at Colasanto Park, 2704 Mount Vernon Ave., from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m.

Great Harvest Bread is hosting a stop at Fairlington Centre, 1711 Centre Plaza, from 6:30 to 9 a.m. Riders can find the stop in front of the bakery, between CVS and Baskin-Robbins, off Quaker Lane.

At Mark Center, Washington Headquarters Services will host a stop from 7 to 9 a.m. at the outdoor bicycle parking area of the North Parking Garage, across from 4825 Mark Center Dr.

In Old Town, the city's GO Alex team will host a stop across from City Hall at Market Square on the 100 block of N. Royal St. from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m., featuring a DJ and appearances by local officials.

For afternoon riders, the American Physical Therapy Association will host a stop at its National Landing headquarters, 3030 Potomac Ave., from 3 to 6 p.m.

Organized by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments' Commuter Connections program and the Washington Area Bicyclist Association, the event encourages residents to consider cycling as a greener and more affordable alternative to driving or transit.

Riders who register and check in at a pit stop can receive a free commemorative purple T-shirt and an entry into a bike raffle. The giveaway is limited to the first 18,000 registrants. Pit stops will also offer snacks, beverages, and other entertainment.

For those new to cycling, free guided convoys led by experienced volunteer commuters will be available along select routes.

GO Alex, the city's transportation demand management program, is among the event's regional sponsors.

Residents can register at biketoworkmetrodc.org or by calling 800-745-7433.
