Spanberger wants a six-year freeze on electricity rates as the price of the Dominion sale

The governor told regulators to reject the $67 billion merger without it. Alexandria and Arlington explain their own case at a webinar Monday, a week before residents' deadline to testify.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Gov. Abigail Spanberger asked state regulators Monday to freeze base residential electricity rates for six years and triple the monthly bill credits offered to customers as conditions of approving NextEra Energy's $67 billion purchase of Dominion Energy, and said the State Corporation Commission should reject the deal if the companies will not agree.

Dominion supplies electricity in Alexandria, and the city is a party to the case.

"Any proposed merger involving Virginia's primary state-regulated utility must benefit families, small businesses, and Virginia's workforce — not just the shareholders of these multi-billion-dollar corporations," Spanberger said in a statement announcing the filing.
