As residents shake off the winter and dig into spring cleaning, city officials are urging Alexandrians to add their medicine cabinets to the list — and safely dispose of expired and unneeded medications at the upcoming National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

The free, anonymous collection event — no questions asked — will be held Saturday, April 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at four locations across Alexandria.

Drop-off sites include Alexandria Police Department Headquarters at 3600 Wheeler Ave., with the collection point in the front lobby; Fire Station 210 at 5255 Eisenhower Ave.; the Neighborhood Pharmacy of Del Ray at 2204 Mount Vernon Ave.; and Walgreens Pharmacy at the Bradlee Shopping Center, 3614 King St.

The event is part of the Drug Enforcement Administration's National Drug Take Back Day and is organized locally by the Alexandria Police Department, the Alexandria Sheriff's Office and the Alexandria Health Department, in cooperation with the Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Alexandria.

The city accepts prescription medications — including those prescribed by veterinarians — as well as over-the-counter drugs. Needles and syringes will not be accepted at any of the four sites.

Residents who cannot attend the April 25 event may dispose of medications year-round at one of the city's permanent medication drop boxes.
