ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Alexandria City beat John Lewis 49-7 on Friday night, its fourth straight win to open the season and its highest-scoring game of the fall.
The Titans are 4-0 under coach Rodney Hughey, with a defense that has allowed 28 points across four games: a 21-7 win over Lake Braddock at home, 17-14 at Potomac, a 35-0 shutout of Crossland and Friday's result at Lewis, which fell to 1-2. Principal Michael Burch posted the result Friday night.
In 2023, Alexandria City went 0-10 and gave up 390 points. It allowed 234 the following fall and won three games. Last season the Titans won six and reached the Class 6 playoffs.
All four wins this fall have come against non-league opponents. District 4 play begins Friday, when Woodson visits Parker-Gray Memorial Stadium for homecoming. The Cavaliers are 1-2, coming off a 48-28 loss to Oakton.
The Titans opened 5-0 in 2025, sitting atop VHSL Division 6A District 4 in what the school called one of its best starts in more than 30 years. They lost five of their final six games and fell 18-13 at Fairfax in the playoffs. Four of those defeats came by a touchdown or less.
Every opponent this season is a rematch of last year's schedule, with home and away flipped almost across the board. The margins have been narrower in two of them: Alexandria City beat Potomac 42-6 last fall and won 17-14 this time, and beat Crossland 42-8 before this month's 35-0. Lewis was the 71-0 game last November, played on the 25th anniversary of "Remember the Titans."
After Woodson comes a bye, then West Potomac, Fairfax, Robinson and West Springfield. Four of those five beat the Titans last fall. South County closes the regular season Nov. 6 on senior night.
Hughey was named the school's fall coach of the year in December. The athletics department credited him with early morning practices and with helping start a middle school program feeding the high school.
Alexandria City has won three state championships, in 1971, 1984 and 1987, and 12 district titles, most recently in 2020.
