The city of Alexandria will host a public meeting on Tuesday evening to update residents on the West Reed Avenue and Dale Street Storm Sewer Improvements, a long-planned flood mitigation project in the Hume Springs neighborhood.
The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Leonard "Chick" Armstrong Recreation Center, 25 W. Reed Avenue. Virtual attendance via Zoom is available with advance registration at zoom.us/webinar/register/WN__78yEMrLQi-EWlcrMa4syA.
City staff will present the final drainage design, provide a project status update, outline anticipated construction impacts and take questions from residents.
The project is part of the Edison Street and Dale Street Early Phase, a broader flood mitigation effort in the Hume Springs neighborhood accelerated by a Virginia Community Flood Preparedness Fund grant. The West Reed Avenue component carries an estimated cost of $2.23 million, funded through a combination of the grant and the city's stormwater utility fee.
The project received final design approval in February. Water main relocation work along West Reed Avenue and Dale Street could begin as early as this month, with gas main relocation on Dale Street expected to follow in summer 2026. Both utility relocations must be completed before storm sewer construction can begin.
The city anticipates advertising the project for public bidding once utility relocations are confirmed to be on schedule, with construction targeted to begin in October.
Additional information about the project can be found on the project webpage.
