Aguirre calls revised Beltway express lanes plan 'a vast improvement' as Virginia seeks November start on review

Alexandria’s member on the regional board said “there’s still much work to be done.” A vote on adding the project to the region’s long-range plan could come as soon as March.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Alexandria's representative on the region's Transportation Planning Board called Virginia's revised plan for express lanes on the Capital Beltway across the Woodrow Wilson Memorial Bridge "a vast improvement" on Wednesday, but he and Maryland officials said much work remains.

Virginia Secretary of Transportation Nick Donohue presented the revised I-495 Southside Express Lanes concept to the board and said he hopes it will vote next month to start a new air quality analysis. That would set up a possible vote as early as March on adding the project to Visualize 2050, the region's long-range transportation plan.

The board took no vote on the project Wednesday.
