Virginia Richards, the 80-year-old Alexandria woman reported critically missing Thursday, has been found safe, police announced Thursday evening.
A passerby spotted Richards and contacted authorities, leading to her recovery, the Alexandria Police Department said in a 6 p.m. statement. She is receiving appropriate care, police said.
Richards had last been seen at 8:15 p.m. Wednesday near the 0 block of W. Del Ray Ave. Police issued a critical missing persons alert early Thursday morning, later correcting the timeline after new information became available.
The department credited the community's response with helping bring the search to a safe conclusion.
"Your willingness to look out for one another played an important role in bringing this search to a safe conclusion," police said in a statement.
