ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The city is looking for Alexandrians who will be 100 or older by Dec. 31 so it can honor them at a celebration this fall.

The Centenarian Celebration, presented by the City of Alexandria and the Successful Aging Committee, is set for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, in the cafeteria of the Del Pepper Community Resource Center at 4850 Mark Center Drive.

Honorees will receive certificates recognizing their lifetime achievements. Birthday cake will be served, and the Alexandria Citizen Band will perform a special musical arrangement. The city says all registered centenarians will be recognized.

Nominations are open to anyone who wants to honor an older loved one living in Alexandria. Forms are available at alexandriava.gov/Aging and are due Tuesday, Aug. 18.

The city honored 13 centenarians at last year's ceremony, four of whom attended in person to receive recognition alongside personalized biographical presentations from Mayor Alyia Gaskins. That event was held in the Vola Lawson Lobby at City Hall; this year's event moves to the West End due to the ongoing construction project at City Hall.

The Successful Aging Committee includes representatives from Senior Services of Alexandria, St. Martin de Porres Senior Center, the Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority, Catholic Charities and the city's Division of Aging and Adult Services and Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities.
