ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Three parts of Alexandria are among Virginia's 153 new Opportunity Zones: the area around Mark Center and two areas south of Interstate 395 near Van Dorn Street, according to a state map of the zones.
Gov. Abigail Spanberger announced in a press release that the U.S. Department of the Treasury approved all of the zones her administration nominated. The designations take effect Jan. 1, 2027.
Opportunity Zones are low-income census tracts where investors can qualify for federal tax incentives. The program was created by the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, and governors nominate the tracts in their states, according to the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development.
