ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Alexandria residents 60 and older can apply now for benefits that cover free fruits and vegetables at local farmers markets, ahead of a series of pop-up markets the city is bringing to residential communities in August.
The city's Division of Aging and Adult Services is accepting applications for the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program, which provides benefits seniors can use to buy fresh produce. To qualify, applicants must be 60 or older, meet income guidelines, and be Alexandria residents.
The city is encouraging eligible residents to apply in advance, noting that funds are limited and that applications will not be available at the markets themselves. Residents can apply online through the program's application page.
The benefits can be used at three pop-up markets, each running from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., offering locally grown fruits, vegetables, and fresh-cut herbs:
- Friday, Aug. 7 — Annie B Rose House, 399 Pendleton St.
- Friday, Aug. 14 — Claridge House II, 301 N. Ripley St.
- Tuesday, Aug. 18 — Alate Old Town, 1112 First St.
The markets also accept Senior Farmers Market benefits, EBT, cash, and cards.
The August pop-ups are separate from Alexandria's five regular farmers markets, which operate on their own schedules: the Old Town market at Market Square, the Del Ray market at East Oxford and Mount Vernon avenues, the Four Mile Run Farmers' and Artisans Market on Mount Vernon Avenue, the Old Town North market at Montgomery Park, and the West End market at Ben Brenman Park. Senior benefits can be used at participating farmers markets.
