ALEXANDRIA, Va - The City of Alexandria will join thousands of area commuters in celebrating National Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 15, with six pit stops spread across the city offering free refreshments, raffle prizes and resources for cyclists.
The free annual event encourages residents to consider bicycle commuting as an affordable and environmentally friendly way to get to work. Participants can stop by designated locations on their morning commute, or in some cases on the ride home, to refuel and connect with fellow riders.
The city's GO Alex team will sponsor a pit stop in Old Town across the street from City Hall Market Square, in the 100 block of North Royal Street, from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. The stop will feature a DJ and visits from local officials. Cyclists who register can pick up grab-and-go refreshments, enter raffles and claim a limited-edition Bike to Work Day T-shirt while supplies last.
Riders looking for a heartier welcome can head to John Carlyle Square Park at 300 John Carlyle St., where the Carlyle Council will host the earliest stop of the day from 6 to 9 a.m. That location will offer hot breakfast sandwiches, yoga stretching breaks, a DJ, visits from elected officials and on-site bike tune-ups from Handy Bikes.
In Del Ray, VéloCity Bicycle Co-op will host cyclists at Colasanto Park, 2704 Mount Vernon Ave., from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. Great Harvest will run the Fairlington Centre stop at 1711 Centre Plaza, near Quaker Lane, from 6:30 to 9 a.m. Washington Headquarters Services will operate the Mark Center stop at the North Parking Garage's outdoor bicycle parking area, across from 4825 Mark Center Drive, from 7 to 9 a.m.
Commuters heading home can stop by the American Physical Therapy Association's afternoon pit stop in National Landing at 3030 Potomac Ave. from 3 to 6 p.m.

The celebration comes one day before bike infrastructure takes center stage at City Hall. On Saturday, May 16, at 9:30 a.m., the City Council will hold a public hearing on an appeal of the Traffic and Parking Board's 6-0 February decision to approve protected bike lanes and parking removal along the Braddock Road corridor. The hearing will take place at the Del Pepper Community Resource Center, 4850 Mark Center Drive — the same complex that hosts one of Friday's pit stops.
