Good morning, Alexandria. It's Thursday, June 4 — the 155th day of 2026, with 210 days left in the year. Seven months ago today, on Nov. 4, 2025, The Alexandria Brief published its first edition. Since then, this newsletter has reached 5,936 subscribers, with 252 of you funding all that we do as paid members, and the archive has grown to nearly 1,500 stories on Alexandria and the region. Thank you for reading, sharing, and supporting this work. We're just getting started.

In today's news: Alexandria firefighters knocked down a house fire on Randolph Avenue on Wednesday afternoon that sent heavy flames through multiple floors and spread to a neighboring property; Little Birdie, the chicken-focused concept from the Matt and Tony's team, will open June 23 at the longtime Benny DiForza's space on Mount Vernon Avenue; the city is planning a small new neighborhood park in Del Ray, with two community meetings this summer to shape the design; and Alexandria is among the localities placed under a new regional drought watch issued by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments after a third straight year of dry conditions.

Tonight is a busy one for civic engagement — five public meetings overlap between 5 and 7 p.m., including the W. Braddock Road safety open house at Minnie Howard, the first ACPS superintendent search community session, and the fifth community meeting on the Commonwealth, Ashby and Glebe Flood Mitigation Project.

Here's what you need to know today.

Little Birdie, a chicken-focused restaurant from the team behind Matt and Tony's, will open June 23 at 1504 B Mount Vernon Ave., filling the Del Ray space that has been empty since Benny DiForza's Pizza closed last fall. The restaurant announced the date Tuesday on Instagram.

The menu centers on sandwiches served on locally baked Japanese milk bread. Options range from the Birdie's Classic, a spiced thigh with house sauce, garlic dill pickles and cabbage slaw, to the Got' Chu, with gochujang glaze and kimchi mayo. A few non-chicken sandwiches round out the list, including a blackened mahi fillet and a charred wild mushroom option.

4️⃣ Regional drought watch issued for Alexandria amid third dry year

COG declares regional Drought Watch, encourages wise water use (COG)

Alexandria is among the localities placed under a regional drought watch issued Tuesday by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, which is urging residents and businesses to conserve water voluntarily after a third straight year of dry conditions.

The watch, declared by COG's Drought Coordination Committee, covers nearly six million residents across the District of Columbia, suburban Maryland and Northern Virginia. Officials said the Potomac River and backup reservoirs hold an adequate supply for now, but they want the public to take simple steps to protect the region's water if dry weather persists.
