ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Kiwi Kuisine will reopen its pie shop on Eisenhower Avenue with a free public event Oct. 10, marking 20 years of selling New Zealand-style handmade pies in the Washington region.
The grand re-opening runs from 10 a.m. to noon at 4548 Eisenhower Ave. A ribbon-cutting is set for 10:30 a.m., with a proclamation from city officials and remarks, followed by a pie-eating contest at 11 with adult and children's divisions.
Pie tastings run the full two hours. The shop is also planning a pie walk, a version of a cakewalk; a hunt for mini sheep hidden around the event; face painting; and a photo backdrop with the shop's sheep.
"Kiwi Kuisine is excited to reopen our doors and share our in-store pie experience with the Alexandria community," founder Bert "Ram" Todd said in a statement.
Todd started the business after moving to the area and wanting the pies he grew up eating in New Zealand. The company makes meat, sweet and vegetable pies and says it uses locally sourced ingredients without artificial flavors, preservatives, trans fats, antibiotics or steroids.
Beyond the Eisenhower Avenue shop, Kiwi Kuisine pies are sold at the Old Town Farmers Market on Saturday mornings, and at Whole Foods and Balducci's locations around the region, according to the company. It also ships.
The shop is normally open Wednesday through Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. It can be reached at 703-988-4800.
