ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Alexandria police have arrested a man in connection with the stabbing of a sleeping man early Tuesday on Mount Vernon Avenue, about 24 hours after the attack.
Detectives located Jelzon Garcia Gonzales, 21, in the 7000 block of Columbia Pike in Annandale, police said Wednesday. Police described him as an Alexandria resident.
He is charged with one count of aggravated malicious wounding and is being held without bond at the Alexandria Adult Detention Center.
The victim, an adult man, remains in critical condition.
Police said the arrest followed multiple tips from the community after the department released an image of the suspect captured by a security camera at a nearby business.
"The community's willingness to come forward with information is a sign of trust in the Alexandria Police Department, and that trust directly supports our ability to keep Alexandria safe," Police Chief Tarrick McGuire said in a statement. He credited detectives in the Criminal Investigations Division with identifying and apprehending the suspect.
The man was sleeping on the ground near the parking lot of the Tiger Market at 3903 Mount Vernon Ave. when another man approached and stabbed him multiple times at about 3:20 a.m. Tuesday, according to police.
EMS called officers to the scene at about 4:08 a.m. for a report of unknown trouble. The victim told them the stabbing had happened an hour or two earlier.
Police said at the time that the suspect ran from the area, crossing Mount Vernon Avenue and continuing onto Executive Avenue toward West Glebe Road.
