A power outage that knocked out service for roughly 2,000 Alexandria customers Thursday morning has been largely restored, with approximately 280 customers still without power as of midday, according to the Dominion Energy outage map.
The rapid restoration — from a peak of more than 2,300 customers earlier in the morning — comes as road closures remain in effect and the threat of wintry weather looms over the afternoon commute.
As of 3:02 p.m., 282 customers remain without power in the Duke Street and Eisenhower Avenue corridor, with Dominion crews now actively working to restore service. Power is estimated to return between 2 and 5 p.m. The cause of the outage is a "broken pole".
City Councilman Abdel Elnoubi posted on X Thursday morning that the following road closures remain in effect until further notice:
- West Street between King Street and Duke Street
- King Street at Payton Street
- The 1400 block of Prince Street
The outages come as Alexandria contends with deteriorating weather. The National Weather Service forecast calls for rain to mix with snow by early afternoon, with gusts up to 31 mph. Less than a half inch of snow accumulation is possible before skies clear tonight, with temperatures dropping to around 32 degrees.
The Alexandria Police Department first alerted residents via social media at 10:52 a.m., urging drivers to treat darkened signals as four-way stops. The city followed with a formal advisory shortly after 11 a.m.
"If traffic signals are out, treat the intersection as a four-way stop," APD wrote on X. "Come to a complete stop and proceed cautiously."
Temporary stop signs have been placed at some affected intersections, and officers have been stationed at others to direct traffic. With slick roads possible later in the day, officials are urging commuters to allow extra travel time into the afternoon hours.
Police and city partners said they are actively monitoring conditions. Drivers are urged to remain patient and alert.

Downed power lines: What to do
Dominion Energy urges anyone who spots a downed power line to treat it as energized and dangerous. Stay at least 30 feet away and call 911 immediately if the line presents a clear danger to people or property. To report a downed line, call Dominion at 866-366-4357 and remain on the line to speak with a representative.
Additional safety guidance from Dominion Energy:
- Electricity can travel through water, metal, wood, and other conductive materials — stay clear of flooded or debris-laden areas where lines may be buried.
- Keep pets as far away from downed lines as possible.
- If someone contacts a downed line, do not attempt a rescue — call 911 instead.
- If a power line falls on your vehicle, stay inside until help arrives. If you must exit, jump clear with both feet landing simultaneously and do not touch the vehicle and ground at the same time.
Dominion responds to every downed line report and will mark lines with yellow tape if electrical or orange tape if belonging to another utility.
