ALEXANDRIA, Va. — A residential fire that drew Alexandria Fire Department crews to the 100 block of Prince Street on Thursday afternoon was accidental and electrical in origin, the department said in an update posted to its Facebook page.

Working smoke detectors activated and alerted the occupant to the fire, AFD said. No civilians were injured. One firefighter sustained a minor injury, was treated, and was released.

The department used the update to remind residents to use surge protectors and extension cords safely and to avoid overloading electrical outlets.

The fire occurred in the heart of Old Town's historic Captain's Row — the cobblestone block of Prince Street that runs from Lee Street down to the Potomac waterfront, lined with some of the city's oldest standing residences.

AFD responded to the fire shortly after 2:30 p.m. Thursday. AFD did not release a damage estimate or specify the exact address.
