A Star Wars 5K, free for kids, lands at Cameron Run on May 3

Light swords for finishers, pizza and beer at Atlas after, and all profits to Tunnel to Towers — the Old Town Run Club's Intergalactic 5K & Kids 1 Miler returns Sunday morning.

The Old Town Run Club's Intergalactic 5K and Kids 1 Miler returns to Cameron Run Regional Park on Sunday, May 3 — the club's Star Wars–themed family race, timed each year to land on or near National Star Wars Day on May 4.

The Kids 1 Miler steps off at 9 a.m. and the 5K at 9:30 a.m. The course is a wooded loop, with start and finish at the same location and free parking on site. Strollers and leashed dogs are welcome.

The Kids 1 Miler is free for ages 10 and under. The 5K is $40 and is open to ages 4 through 100. Co-organizer Eric Danesi told The Alexandria Brief during an interview on Saturday that costumes are encouraged for all ages, with prizes for best dress, and the club has accumulated a pile of donated Star Wars gear for kids who participate. "We'll give for best dress any kid that dresses up," he said. "And of course, just for a kid being there, we're going to have something."

Every finisher receives a light sword in place of a medal. T-shirts — Empire black or Rebellion olive — were guaranteed only for runners who registered by April 17. Packet pickup is Saturday, May 2 from 1 to 5 p.m. at Atlas Brew Works; on-site registration and packet pickup will also be available the morning of the race, with registration closing at 9:30 a.m.

After the race

The post-race party moves to Atlas Brew Works at 2429 Mandeville Lane, where each runner's bib comes with two vouchers: one for a slice of Andy's Pizza, and one for a drink at Atlas. Both companies are returning sponsors.

Atlas will also host Star Wars Team Trivia, with a $100 gift card for the winning team and smaller prizes for second and third place.

Danesi said the food-and-drink sponsorship has helped keep registration costs down. "That's their way of kind of sponsoring us on top of the sponsorship they already gave us," he said.

About the club

The Old Town Run Club is a 501(c)(3) based in Alexandria. The group organizes weekly group runs out of Old Town pubs and hosts two annual local races at Cameron Run — the Intergalactic 5K in the spring and the Jingle Bell 5K in December — alongside a longer-distance 9/11 Remembrance Run each September.

All profits from the Intergalactic 5K go to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, the Staten Island–based charity that provides mortgage-free homes to catastrophically injured veterans and first responders, as well as Gold Star families and the families of fallen first responders. The foundation was founded to honor FDNY firefighter Stephen Siller, who died at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.
