Good morning, Alexandria.
First, thank you for yesterday. The replies, the forwards, and the new subscribers after the anniversary note were more than I expected, and I read every one.
Last night in Rosemont, the citizens association voted 60-6 to ask City Council to adopt the original staff design for Russell Road instead of Modified Alternative C, the version the transportation director settled on after rejecting both plans the Traffic and Parking Board considered. Sixty-six people voted in a neighborhood the association’s own figures put at 4,136 residents; under its rules, every resident and property owner is a member, so the position goes to council as Rosemont’s. John Leary, one of the three residents whose appeals council hears Nov. 14, made the motion, and it was the only question put to the room. Some of the arguments for it, including that Russell Road has a parking shortage, differed from what a city transportation staffer said at the same meeting 40 minutes earlier. I’ll have the full story on the site later this morning.
Tonight at 6 p.m., the School Board will review Acting Superintendent Grace Taylor’s proposed 10-year capital plan, the document that must answer last week’s questions about middle school seats. It arrives as the division’s public dashboard shows enrollment is down 4% this fall to 15,295, and Patrick Henry K-8 alone lost 276 students after redistricting. The plan goes to a public hearing Tuesday, with a vote Dec. 17. Across town, the Planning Commission meets at Del Pepper at 7 p.m., and the city holds its second community meeting on the draft Flood Resilience Plan at Charles Houston.
Here’s what you need to know for Thursday, Nov. 5.
