ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The City of Alexandria Pipes and Drums will perform a free outdoor concert at Waterfront Park in Old Town on Friday, Aug. 21.
The performance runs from 7:45 to 8:30 p.m. at Waterfront Park, 1 Prince St. It is open to all ages, and no tickets are required.
It will be the band's only summer concert this year. A July 17 performance was cancelled when Canadian wildfire smoke pushed regional air quality into the Code Purple range, a level at which health officials advise everyone to limit time outdoors.
Both dates had been moved this year from Market Square, the concerts' longtime home outside City Hall, because of ongoing construction there.
Known as "Alexandria's Own," the ensemble traces its roots to 1971, when a group of pipers and drummers began playing together in the city. With backing from the local tourist council and business leaders, the band was formally organized the following year as a way to mark Alexandria's Scottish heritage. It combines precision marching with traditional pipe and drum arrangements.
Band members will stay after the performance to meet audience members, pose for photographs and answer questions from anyone interested in joining.
The concerts are presented by the Office of Historic Alexandria, which operates eight museums and historic sites along with the city's archives and public programs.
