The City of Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities will offer its Out of School Time Power-On Program for children in kindergarten through sixth grade during the 2026-27 school year, with registration beginning next month.
The afterschool program will run Monday, Aug. 24, through Thursday, June 17, from 2:30 to 6 p.m. Start and end dates are subject to change based on the Alexandria City Public Schools traditional school calendar.
The program will be offered at Charles Barrett, Charles Houston, Leonard "Chick" Armstrong, Mount Vernon, Patrick Henry and William Ramsay recreation centers, as well as Ferdinand T. Day, John Adams and Douglas MacArthur elementary schools.
The 2026-27 program fee is $892 for the school year. Reduced rates are available: $305 for families with documentation of free or reduced-price school meals, $255 for families receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits and $149 for families receiving Temporary Assistance to Needy Families benefits. Program fees are subject to increase beginning July 1.
The Nannie J. Lee Recreation Center will also offer its Youth Achieving Greatness Program, which features structured enrichment activities to build learning, independence, socialization and leadership skills. The program runs Aug. 24 through June 17, 2027, with a fee of $1,495 for the school year. Financial assistance is available.
Both programs are open only to city residents.
A pre-registration period for Alexandria residents who qualify for financial assistance will run from Sunday, June 7, through Friday, June 12. Pre-registration forms will be available online, and printed forms can be picked up and dropped off at the Lee Center Registration and Reservation Office at 1108 Jefferson St., as well as the Charles Houston, Leonard "Chick" Armstrong, Mount Vernon, Patrick Henry and William Ramsay recreation centers.
Pre-registration submissions will be placed in a computerized lottery to randomly determine the order of eligible applicants and generate a waitlist if needed. Selected applicants will be contacted by email or phone beginning June 17 and must complete registration by June 23.
Remaining openings will be available through general online-only registration on Wednesday, June 24, at 9 a.m. In-person and online registration for any remaining openings will be available starting Thursday, June 25, at any neighborhood recreation center or Power-On afterschool location during regular program hours.
