ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Virginia Tech’s Board of Visitors on Wednesday appointed Richard Linton, the president of Kansas State University and a Virginia Tech alumnus, as the university’s 17th president.

Linton will take office at the start of the spring 2027 semester. Tim Sands, who announced in April that he would step down once a successor was named, will serve until then.

“Having earned three degrees here, the opportunity to return home and serve as president of my alma mater is a true honor,” Linton said in a statement.
