ALEXANDRIA, Va. - The Alexandria Commission on Aging will hold its annual Excellence in Aging Awards on Tuesday, May 12, with Mayor Alyia Gaskins recognizing five honorees in four categories at the Del Pepper Community Resource Center.

The 4:30 p.m. program in the center's cafeteria honors people and organizations whose work has benefited older Alexandrians. RSVPs are due May 9 to agingcommission@alexandriava.gov.

Cele Garrett will receive the Annie B. Rose Lifetime Award, the commission's top honor, given to an individual who has served older adults for at least 10 years. Kimerlyn Butler will receive the Lois Van Valkenburgh Excellence in Aging Award, which recognizes at least one year of service.

Marshall Hespe and Sedella Brooks will share the Excellence in Aging Award for an Organization for their work with the Meals on Wheels program.

Helen McIlvaine will receive the Public Service Award, given to a city employee whose work has helped make Alexandria a more livable community for all ages. McIlvaine retired April 30 as the city's director of the Office of Housing after 20 years with Alexandria.

The ceremony venue itself is named for a former honoree: Del Pepper, the 2014 recipient of the Annie B. Rose Lifetime Award.

The Commission on Aging recently helped shape the city's new Age Friendly Plan, a five-year roadmap for senior services that the City Council adopted in March.
