ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The months of weekend Metro closures at Crystal City station are over, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority announced, wrapping up the disruptive construction work two weeks ahead of schedule.
WMATA said the planned weekend shutdowns, part of the Crystal City Project to build a second station entrance, are now finished. The agency had originally scheduled closures stretching through the Juneteenth weekend of June 19-21, but completed the work early — clearing the Blue and Yellow lines for a packed stretch of regional events.
The timing means full service will be running for Capital Pride, Freedom 250 and FIFA World Cup events in the region.
WMATA thanked riders for their patience during the closures, which began in February and ran across roughly 10 weekends this spring. During the affected weekends, Blue and Yellow line trains ran in split segments outside the closure zone, with free shuttle buses replacing trains between National Airport and Pentagon City.
The second entrance, intended to improve access and capacity at the busy station, is set to open next year.
