Good morning, Alexandria. It's Monday, July 6 — the day the heat wave ends.
The National Weather Service issued no heat advisories or warnings this morning for the first time since Wednesday, closing out a six-day stretch that saw three days under an Extreme Heat Warning with observed heat index values reaching 112 degrees Friday. The forecast for the rest of the week doesn't reach those thresholds again — but a Flood Watch takes effect at 4 p.m. today through midnight, with hourly rainfall rates that could push 2 to 3 inches in the strongest storms. Details on both are in the lead story.
Also worth catching up on: Saturday brought a striking scene at Mount Vernon, where 150 people from 50 countries became US citizens on America's 250th birthday. And Alexandria's own celebration is Saturday — the 277th/250th at Oronoco Bay Park, with cupcakes, the Alexandria Symphony, and fireworks.
Here's what's happening in Alexandria.
1️⃣ Alexandria's dangerous heat stretch ends today — but a flash flood risk takes its place

Alexandria's dangerous heat stretch is over. The National Weather Service issued no heat advisories or warnings Monday for the first time since Wednesday, July 1, ending a six-day run in which the region operated under an active heat alert every single day — including three days under an Extreme Heat Warning with observed heat index values that reached 112 degrees.
Monday itself is transitional. The forecast high is 90 degrees, with a heat index up to 101 — hot, but no longer at the level requiring an NWS advisory. And no day for the rest of the week reaches those thresholds either. Tuesday's high is forecast at 84, Wednesday at 84, Thursday at 89, Friday at 93, Saturday at 89, and Sunday at 87. The seven-day forecast doesn't include a single high above 93 or a heat-index note.
But the weather isn't done demanding attention.

2️⃣ 150 people from 50 countries become US citizens at Mount Vernon on America's 250th birthday

The people who were about to become United States citizens sat in folding chairs on George Washington's lawn at Mount Vernon on Saturday, 250 years after the Declaration of Independence.
The sun beat down and the well-dressed crowd was a flutter of paddle fans stamped with American flags. Their families clung to the shade of the trees on either side, where one woman had two American flags stuck through her ponytail.

4️⃣ ICYMI: School Board chair addresses budget, unfinished CBA, superintendent transition

Alexandria's first-ever collective bargaining agreement with its teachers and staff has not been ratified and remains unfinished, School Board Chair Dr. Michelle Rief said, confirming the status of a deal that was a defining and contentious feature of the past school year.
In written responses to questions from The Alexandria Brief, Rief said the two sides reached a tentative agreement on the economic portions of a proposed contract but "have not yet reached a final agreement on the non-economic portions." She said ACPS expects to engage with the Education Association of Alexandria's newly elected leadership — the union is currently holding a leadership election — before negotiations continue.
