Good morning, Alexandria. It's Tuesday, May 19— the 139th day of 2026, with 226 days left in the year.
It's going to be hot today. Really hot.
The forecast calls for a high near 97 degrees — the hottest day of the year so far. Air quality is expected to brush the edge of the "unhealthy for sensitive groups" range, with ground-level ozone driving the AQI to 97. The city is urging residents to check on neighbors, drink water before they're thirsty, stay in air-conditioned spaces if possible, and limit outdoor activity during the hottest hours. Heat becomes especially dangerous when it lingers — and tonight's low is only expected to drop to 73 degrees.
Our lead story is difficult: A woman was killed inside an apartment at 27 Canterbury Square early Monday morning. Officers responding to the scene fatally shot the male suspect after he allegedly charged at them. Both are dead. APD held a media briefing yesterday; more details are in the story below.
Also today: ACPS released its annual climate survey — big gains in safety perceptions, lingering doubts on transparency. And Alexandria's elected leaders are lining up behind Rep. Don Beyer ahead of a crowded August primary.
Stay cool out there. Here's what you need to know today.

2️⃣ ACPS climate survey shows big gains in safety, lingering doubts on transparency

Alexandria City Public Schools students, families, and staff reported significantly more positive views of the division across nearly every measure on its annual climate survey this year, with one stubborn exception: transparency about how decisions get made.
The 2025-26 ACPS 2030 Climate Survey — the first administered under the division's new five-year strategic plan — drew 7,278 respondents, more than any previous version of the survey and more than double the high school student participation of any prior year. The results will be presented to the School Board on Thursday as a monitoring item.

3️⃣ Braddock Road appeal coverage updated

Our Braddock Road appeal story has been updated multiple times since it was first published as breaking news Saturday night at 9:04 p.m. — just minutes after the 4-3 vote. Over the past few days, I've added reactions from council members and project supporters, details on two rejected substitute motions, and clarifications after listening to the meeting again on Monday. This is how I cover major decisions: get a fair and balanced news story out, then build on it as more information and new reactions come in.

4️⃣ Alexandria leaders line up behind Beyer ahead of crowded Democratic primary

A who's who of Alexandria's current and former elected officials endorsed U.S. Rep. Don Beyer's reelection bid Monday, offering a broad show of local support as the seven-term congressman heads into a contested Democratic primary in August.
The endorsement was signed by Mayor Alyia Gaskins, Vice Mayor Sarah Bagley and City Council members Canek Aguirre, John Chapman, Jacinta Greene and Sandy Marks. Councilmember Abdel Elnoubi did not sign on. Former Mayors Bill Euille, Allison Silberberg and Justin Wilson also signed, as did Commonwealth's Attorney Bryan Porter, Clerk of the Court Greg Parks and Sheriff Sean Casey.

5️⃣ Symphony, Del Ray Artisans pair music and art for season finale May 30

Music and visual art will share the stage in Alexandria later this month when the Symphony Orchestra of Northern Virginia closes its season with a concert built around works that also inspired a citywide art project.
SONOVA will perform "Pictures at an Alexandria Exhibition" at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 30, at the Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center on the Alexandria campus of Northern Virginia Community College. The concert is the culmination of a months-long collaboration between SONOVA, Del Ray Artisans, and the Symphony Orchestra League of Alexandria.
