ALEXANDRIA, Va - Good morning, Alexandria. It's Tuesday, May 5 — the 125th day of 2026, with 240 days left in the year. Feliz Cinco de Mayo.

The Croatian postage stamp exhibit that opened Monday at the Torpedo Factory is a reminder of something Alexandria does well: welcoming the world. This summer, the city hosts Croatia's World Cup base camp. But you don't have to wait for the tournament to experience global culture here — it's already on display at the Torpedo Factory and available at tables all across Alexandria.

Alexandria is home to immigrant-owned kitchens and women-led businesses shaping one of the region's most globally influenced dining scenes — Ethiopian at Makeda and Feru, Turkish coffee traditions at Turkish Coffee Lady, Salvadoran pupusas at El Pulgarcito, Nepalese momos at Royal Nepal, and dozens more. Visit Alexandria has a guide to the city's global cuisine and a list of 20+ international restaurants worth exploring.

And on Cinco de Mayo — which commemorates Mexico's 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla, not Mexican Independence Day — consider skipping the chain and supporting a neighborhood restaurant - there are so many to choose from.

King Street reopens this afternoon after VRE bridge work ran long. Tonight, the Planning Commission takes up backyard beekeeping rules and the Old Town Pool replacement at 7 p.m., with a Duke Street work session at 6 p.m.

Sunny and 85 degrees today. Summer preview.

Here's what you need to know today.

A Croatian postage stamp exhibit that Visit Alexandria said is making its first appearance outside Croatia opened Monday night at the Torpedo Factory Art Center, where Alexandria Mayor Alyia Gaskins and Croatian Ambassador to the United States Pjer Šimunović framed the show not just as a cultural showcase but as the opening act of a months-long effort to turn an incoming World Cup partnership into a lasting friendship.

"Philately in Croatia: Exploring a Legacy of Innovation and Artistry" features roughly 20 large display panels reproducing rare Croatian stamps and tracing their history, presented jointly by the Croatian Post and Croatia's Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs. The exhibit runs through May 10 at 105 N. Union St. and is free to the public daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

"The wreath we lay is not just a symbol, but a solemn promise: we honor those who gave their lives serving our neighborhoods, stand with the families who carry that loss, and reaffirm that public safety is built together. Their sacrifice is part of our community's story, and it continues to guide how we serve, with honor, courage, and integrity, and how we care for one another."
