ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Alexandria City Public Schools aims to decide by 6 p.m. the night before whether bad weather will close or delay schools, and to make any same-day call by 4:30 a.m., under a new decision-making process laid out in a memo and presentation posted for Thursday's School Board meeting.

The process sets a fixed timeline that begins 72 hours before expected weather, a four-question checklist for school leaders and five plain-language operating statuses: Open, Two-Hour Delay, Early Dismissal, Virtual Learning Day and Closed. Each decision would be announced in one message sent on every ACPS channel at the same time.

The item is listed on the agenda as information, and the memo recommends that the board review the process. No vote is scheduled. The memo is from Chief Operating Officer Anthony Peña and Julia Burgos, chief of school and community relations, through Acting Superintendent Grace Taylor.
