Gov. Abigail Spanberger visited Cornerstone Craftsman on Tuesday to watch Alexandria teenagers building an Inova hospital mock-up alongside Clark Construction crews. On her way out she wrote on the wall: the program is helping them gain skills, but they've also shown "the strength, grit, and ability to do great things."
Also today: a crowdsourced report counted 241 near-miss reports in Alexandria over 18 months, with children present in more than half — none of which appears in the city's crash numbers. Every Virginia agency whose officers are deputized to enforce immigration law on patrol has come off Alexandria's Flock sharing list. And police are looking for a man who stabbed a sleeping man on Mount Vernon Avenue early Tuesday.

1️⃣ Children were present in half of 241 near-miss reports filed in Alexandria
People filed 241 reports of near misses and dangerous locations in Alexandria over an 18-month stretch, and children were present or nearby in more than half of them, according to a report released this month by Northern Virginia Families for Safe Streets.
None of it shows up in the city's numbers. Alexandria's crash dashboard counts crashes reported to police that involved an injury, a death, or at least $1,500 in damage. A driver who runs a stop sign and misses a kid in a crosswalk generates no report at all.
2️⃣ No Virginia agency deputized to enforce immigration law on patrol can search Alexandria's cameras anymore
No Virginia law enforcement agency whose officers are deputized to enforce federal immigration law during routine patrol can still search Alexandria's license plate reader cameras, a Brief analysis found. Eleven agencies disappeared from the city's public Flock sharing list between Friday and Tuesday, and every one holds a 287(g) Task Force agreement with ICE.
The removals came days after Police Chief Tarrick McGuire told City Council the department could do exactly that. APD hasn't confirmed it did, or explained the basis.
3️⃣ Police seek help identifying suspect in early morning stabbing on Mount Vernon Avenue
Alexandria police are asking for help identifying a man they say stabbed a sleeping man several times early Tuesday in Arlandria. The victim was on the ground near the Tiger Market parking lot at 3903 Mount Vernon Ave. when it happened around 3:20 a.m.
Police are investigating it as felony aggravated malicious wounding and have released a photo. Anyone who recognizes the man is asked to call Detective Griffin at 703-746-6782.

The joint city-schools committee has ruled out changing how Alexandria elects its School Board in time for 2027, pointing to 2030 or later. After two meetings, the four members agree on four-year terms and little else, and remain split on staggered elections and whether to shrink the nine-member board. (The Brief)

On this day in Alexandria's history
Two things happened in Alexandria on Sept. 17.
In 1889, the Alexandria Gazette reported the city's first 40 electric street lamps burning. There was no ceremony — the current came on from a new plant built at the site of the old gasworks — but small crowds gathered at intersections where 1,500-candlepower fixtures hung 20 feet overhead. At dusk, Mayor Downham and plant manager W.E. Guthrie threw the switch, and cheers went up across the city as the lights came on "steady, almost white." (Historic Alexandria)
And in 1949, George Washington High School in Del Ray opened its football season on a fall day with the stadium full and President Harry S. Truman in the crowd. Truman had come to Alexandria to help bury a time capsule at the flagpole near the north goal post, marking the city's bicentennial. The capsule — a stainless steel cylinder about four feet long and eight inches across — held photographs, newspapers, documents, books and artifacts going back to 1749. Warner Brothers Pathé News filmed it, and the footage ran in more than 176,000 theaters. (Historic Alexandria)
